Anand Mohan Zutshi Gulzar Dehlavi was an Urdu poet, scholar, and journalist. He was born on 7 July 1926 in old Delhi’s Gali Kashmeerian. His parents were poets. His father, Pandit Tribhuvan Nath, also known as Zar Dehlavi was a Professor. His pen name was Zaar. His mother was Brij Rani Zutshi who wrote in the name Be-Zaaar. He had a brother Khar Dehlavi Anand Dehlavi recited and memorized verses in Urdu, Persian, and Shlokas of Sanskrit during childhood. He was familiar with teachings of all religions as well. He knew that the common principle in the texts Gita, the Bible, and the Holy Quran was peace. After listening to Anand Delhvi’s poetry, his Ustad gave him his pen-name Gulzar. He completed his education in Ramjas School and BVJ Sanskrit School after which he pursued Master of Arts from Hindu College. He married Kavitha Zutshi.
He has a son Anoop and a daughter Meena. As an orator, Anand Dehlavi had an acute memory and kept his audience interested by sharing anecdotes and narratives of events. His contemporaries admired and cherished him. Other than his native language Kashmiri and Urdu, he knew languages like Hindi, Persian, Sanskrit, and Arabic. In 1975, he was the chief editor for Science ki Duniya, Urdu’s first journal dedicated to science and technology. The renowned political scientist Dr. Devasya Verma found his inspiration in him. On 15 August 1947, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru recited his poetry Zaurat hai Un Naujawano Ki in Red Fort. He has written many ghazals like us sitamgar ki mehrbani se, ek kafir-ada ne lut liya, hum jo guzra unki mahfil ke qarib, etc. His subjects for poetry were love, philosophy, and mysticism.For his contribution to Urdu poetry, he was honoured by the vice president of India on his 90th birthday. He died on 12 June 2020 in Noida, Uttar Pradesh.
