Syed Hussain Jaun Asghar Naqvi, widely known as Jaun Elia, was born on 14th December 1931, at Amroha in Uttar Pradesh, India. Elia was an Urdu Poet, philosopher, biographer, and scholar from the South Asian Continent. Elia was born and raised in India, he migrated to Karachi, Pakistan after the partition of India. However, as a Marxist, Elia opposed the India-Pakistan partition.
He completed his primary education under the guidance of his father Shafiq Elia. He was also well-versed in five different languages – Sanskrit, Arabic, English, Persian, and Hebrew. At Karachi, he supervised writing and compilation, at the Ismailia Association, from 1963 to 1968. Elia's vision was heavily shaped and influenced by communist ideals and principles. His literary works reflect the communist revolution and class consciousness. According to Elia, religion and Communism were not antithetical. His idea of Marxism was a combination of religious and Communist values. His interests revolve around the subjects of History, Philosophy, and religion. His first compendium was published in the year 1991 named ‘Shayad’.
Thereafter he promulgated many other anthologies like 'Yaani' (2003), Gumaan (2004), Lekin (2006), and Goya (2008). Followed by Goya, he also published a book titled 'Farnood' in the same year. His book named Rumooz remains unpublished. He was married to Zahida Hena but mutually separated later. Jaun Elia was honored with the prestigious award of excellence by the Pakistani Government for his notable contribution in the field of literature. Jaun Elia died in the year 2002, on 8th November.
