He was best known for his poetry in Urdu and Persian languages. Turkish and Persian were the two languages spoken by his family. He was son of Mirza Abdullah Baig Khan and Izzat-ut-Nisa Begum. His father served as the Nawab of Lucknow and after that as the Nizam of Hyderabad. His father died in the battle of Alwar in 1803 when Ghalib was only five years old. After Ghalib’s death, his uncle took care of him. He got married at the age of 13 years to Umrao Begum. She was daughter of Nawab Ilahi Bakhsh. He was later shifted to Delhi in 1812 with his younger brother, Mirza Yousuf Khan. He was a father to seven children, and all his children died in infancy.

His poetry reflects the emotion of love, struggles in life, grief, desire, and disappointment. One of his best works is Ode-e-Hindi which means Perfume of Hindi; in the form of Perso-Arabic script. One of his ghazals was first translated into English by Sarfaraz K. Niazi and was named Love Sonnets of Ghalib. He died on 15th of February, 1869 at the age of 71 in Chandni Chowk, New Delhi. His main aim was to spread happiness through his writings. He is famous for his works in India and Pakistan as well.
