During his childhood, he used to go the nearby theaters in his locality and watch the dramas on display. He used to watch them very closely and note all the details down.
In those days, Vijayawada was also known as the film city of the South. Most of the theaters in the South were present in Vijayawada. Many of his school friends were the siblings of some theater owners due to which he had a major advantage. He could see most of the plays and the dramas in the theaters for free and his interest in films kept on increasing due to this. In 1967, Rama Rao travelled to Madras, now Chennai. During his travel, he met K. R. Rao, a very famous South Indian film director through his father. He liked Rama Rao and offered him to work with him in some of his films.
Rama was already a film enthusiast and so he readily accepted the offer. By the end of 1970, Rama had already been a part of three films which were all directed by K. R. Rao. Although Rama Rao was a part of K.R Rao’s films, his favorite director was P. Kanagal, and it was his dream to work with him. P. Kangal was directing the film ‘Nangu Premitchu’. Somehow, Rama came to know about the fact that this film was being made with the help of newcomers and no experienced actor or famous actor was a part of this venture.
He decided to try his luck. He borrowed a sum of fifty thousand from his friend and brought the rights of that film. Rama Rao worked very hard for the publicity of the film. He used Radio and the newspapers to spread the news about the film and get the viewer’s opinion and advice. His hard work created a lot of curiosity about the film among the viewers, but unfortunately, the movie was a big flop. But Rama Rao did not take it as a setback. He worked hard to make a successful return as a producer and has till now produced some films.
