Bhargavaram Viththal Varerkar, well-known as Mama Warerkar, is a Marathi Writer in Bombay. He was born in 1883 in Chiplun Ratnagiri in Maharashtra and died in 1964. He completed his high school in Malvan, Ratnagiri and Dapoli. Varerkar left his studies before graduation and started working. He worked as a Postal Clerk. He then shifted to Mumbai. He started writing and wrote many Novels and plays. Varerkar wrote his first play named Kunjawihari in the year 1907.
He wrote plays, novels, short stories, and film scripts in historic social themes of the Colonized India. He translated many Novels by Bengali writer Sharat Chandra Chatterji into Marathi. His writings made an impact and strongly reflected the plight of many helpless women under male Dominance and the empathy for laborers under the Dominance of their employers. His Marathi drama Singaputarun defines the revolutionary activities of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose against the backdrop of the Second World War.
He is a fearless progressive achiever in Marathi Literature and Theatre. He encouraged the nation to rise against colonialism. He championed women's Liberation against a Patriarchal society in Bhoomikanya Sita. Varerkar was also involved in Politics. In the year 1944, he presided over Marathi Sahitya Sammelan in Dhule. Varerkar was a Member of the upper house of the Indian parliament, the Rajya Sabha. Varerkar was the recipient of the Padma Bhushan in 1959.
