Arun Sadhu was a renowned Marathi writer and freelance journalist. He was born on 17 June, 1941 and brought up in Achalpur, a small town of Amravati District in the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra. Initially, he started his career as a freelance journalist working for different English newspapers in British India. Then, he became the professor and the head of the Department of Communication and Journalism at Pune University and worked there for six years.Â
After that, in the 1960s, he began to pursue journalism and worked at the Marathi daily ‘Kesri’ as a political news reporter in Pune. He spent almost three decades i.e., thirty years in the field of journalism, and worked for some of the most renowned newspaper and media companies such as The Times of India, Statesman, The Indian Express, and the Free Press Journal in Mumbai. He also served as a stringer for the Time magazine.
Sadhu was also known for his literary works for which he won several awards and accolades. Every novel he has written is a landmark in Marathi literature. However, ‘Sinhasan’ was one of his most popular works. Based on corruption and politics, the book highlights the strong nexus and relations that exists between politicians and industrial leaders. Another significant novel was Mumbai Dinank. Besides, he has written several other short stories, novels, plays, and books on contemporary history, as well as some editorial articles opposing violence such as Maharashtra, Mukhawata, Fidel, Che Ani Kranti, Padgam play, Dragon Jaga Jhalyawar, Hindi version Bambai Dinank, Shodhyatra, Bahishkrut, Trishanku, Glanirbhavati Bharat (Short Stories), Sphot, Tisari Kranti, Kakasaheb Gadgil (In English and Hindi), etc.
In his remarkable career, Sadhu has won several awards for his outstanding literary work such as the Sahitya Akademi Award, N C Kelkaraward, Rachna Award, Janasthan Award, Bharatiya Bhasha Parishad Award, and Acharya Atre Award. He has also served as the President of Marathi Sahitya Sammelan at Nagpur in 2007. His writings also tried to address the international and national affairs of his time including the stories about countries such as China and Russia. The legendary writer and journalist passed away on 25 September 2017 in Mumbai. He was suffering from cardiomyopathy and was admitted to Sion Hospital, Mumbai.
