Jaidev Subbarao Hattangandi was a renowned Marathi theater director, writer, critic, and actor. He was born on 28 August 1948. Pandit Satyadev Dubey taught him the art of theatre direction. Jaidev then enrolled at the National School of Drama (N.S.D.) in Delhi, where he also had a teaching position and received his degree in drama from N.S.D. His theatre career started at the theatre institute Avishkar.' The play "Changuna," presented by the group on an experimental stage, made Jaidev famous. While in 'Avishkar,' he directed and appeared in the plays, and he was one the pillar of 'The Avishkar theater organization and was also closely connected to the Indian People's Theatre Association (IPTA).

The devoted theatre artist, Hattangadi directed about 100 dramas in Hindi and Marathi. He made his acting debut with the play 'Mitti Ki Gadi (1975), directed by M.S. Sathyu and R.M. Singh. Some of his notable plays directed by him include "Poster," "Sangun," "Baki Itihaas," "Wara Bhavani Aai Sa," "Surya Ke Waris," and "Kutte." He received the Maharashtra State Award for 'Sangun.' He also acted in a few of them; some of his most famous plays include 'Poster,' 'Sangun,' 'Baki Itihaas,' 'Wara Bhavani Aai Sa,' 'Surya Ke Waris' and 'Kutte.' Hattangadi established his theater institution called ' Kalashraya. 'This theater institute brought the plays 'Aparajit' (Marathi-Hindi), 'Evm Indrajit' (Hindi), and 'Wada Bhavani Aicha' to the experimental stage.
Even after the establishment of 'Kalashraya,' Jaydev Hattangadi remained an integral part of 'Avishkar.' Hattangadi formerly instructed in theatre at Sayajirao Gaikwad University in Baroda. Hattangadi, who was suffering from cancer, died on 5 December 2008 at his house in Bandra, Mumbai.
