Marathi Dancer Shubhada Varadkar

Shubhada Varadkar is a well-known Indian classical dancer. She is the recipient of Senior Fellowship by Ministry of Culture, Government of India. In 1983, she completed her Masters in Economics at the University of Mumbai, Maharashtra. She also did diploma in Bharat Natyam at the Kalasadan Institute of Fine Arts. Then, she took a diploma in higher education at the University of Mumbai in 1987. She took training under the guidance of Padmavibhushan late Guru Shri Kelucharan Mohapatra from 1987 to 2004. She also performed Arangetram under tutelage of Guru Shri Mani.A postgraduate in Economics, Shubhada Varadkarworked as a newscaster on television for a few time and was a lecturer at R. R. Ruia College, Mumbai. She belongs to the Maharashtrian family. Her grandfather, Dr. V. R. Khanolkar was the first Dean of Tata Memorial Cancer Research Institute.

She was passionate towards Indian classical dance since childhood. Shubhada Varadkar got diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2006. But, she has not allowed cancer to get in the way of her passion. She then used to do a chemotherapy session, rest for a week and instantly go for a performance. After her treatment has completed and her cancer has gone, she took up dancing again. Though, her deep commitment to dance lead her to receive prestigious awards, including Sringar Mani, Maharashtra Gourav, Priyadarshini, Mahari Award, and many more. She enthralled the audience with her artistic excellence nationally and internationally at many prestigious festivals like Ellora Festival- Maharashtra, Khajurao Festival- UK, Mahari Festival –Bhubaneshwar, Natyanjali festival- Chidambaram, National festival of Odissi dance- Bhubaneshwar, festival of India- Ghana, festival of India- Venezuela, and many more.

Shubhada Varadkar also teaches classical dance to children and conducts workshops in Odissi dance at various places& globally on a regular basis for past twenty-five years. She conducted dance workshops for School of Philosophy, Spain and UK. She has also authored an eBook, titled “The Glimpse of Indian Classical Dance.” Also, she has documented her fight with ovarian cancer in another book titled “Mayurpankh.” It is the first Marathi book to be published in print, audio book, and e-book format. She has organized various cultural festivals, including Prayaag and Namamee. She is a founder director and chairperson of Sanskrita Foundation. It is a registered cultural trust in Mumbai, which offers dance lessons to underprivileged kids and also collects money for cancer patients at Tata Memorial Centre.

She is the member of Examination Committee of Akhil Bhartiya Gandarva Mahavidyalaya, Miraj. Her significant productions include “Kanupriya” based on Dr. Dharmvir Bharti’s poetry, “Journey To Divinity” based on the life and philosophy of Swami Vivekananda, “Amrutghanu” based on Sant Dnyaneshwar’s literature, and Ravindranath Tagore’s “Chitraangada.” Therefore, she is an ‘A’ grade National artist for Doordarshan, the Indian television channel, and empanelled artist of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations, New Delhi.
