Prabodhankar Keshav Sitaram Thackeray was born as Keshav Sitaram Panvelkar. He was a renowned Indian social reformer, writer, politician, and social activist. He was born on 17th September 1885, in Panvel, Bombay Presidency, British India (now Maharashtra, India), and he died on 20th November 1973, in Bombay (now Mumbai), Maharashtra, India. Keshav got his education done at Panvel, Kalyan, Baramati, and Bombay (now Mumbai). He then studied at the Victoria High School in Dewas (Central Provinces), and, further at Calcutta University. Prabodhankar Thackeray made some vital contributions to many spheres of society. He played an important role in the Samyukta Maharashtra Movement, a significant campaign rousing the founding of the linguistic state of Maharashtra.

As he was one of the founding members of the Samyukta Maharashtra Samiti, he dynamically fought for the creation of Maharashtra and the existence of regions like Belgaum and Mumbai within its limits. Besides his political pursuits, Prabodhankar Thackeray contributed significantly to Marathi literature. He started the publication of Prabodhan, a fortnightly magazine that helped him get fame for his pen name, Prabodhankar. He has written an autobiography named Mazhi Jeevangatha. Through his writings, he researched historical studies, wrote interesting plays, translated works, documented biographies, and shared smart views. His literary choice encompasses prominent works like "Mazhi Jeevangatha" (My autobiography), "Gramanyachya Sadhyant Itihas Arthat Nokarashiche Banda" (A Comprehensive History of Rebellion or the Revolt of the Bureaucrats), "Shri Sant Gadgebaba" and "Uth Marathya Uth."

Khara Brahman, Sangeet Vidhinishedh, Taklele Por, and Sangeet Seetashuddhi are some plays written by him. He has written two biographies, Shri Sant Gadgebaba, and Pandit Ramabai Saraswati. Some translations done by him are Hindu janancha rhaas aani adhapaat, Shanimahatmya, and Shetkaryanche Swarajya. Prabodhankar Thackeray fought against the existing societal problems of his time. He courageously campaigned against delusions, untouchability, child marriage, and dowry. He challenged the engrained practices and stimulated meaningful reform using his literary skills and writing inspiring stories. His revolutionary anti-dowry protests got much fame and support, leaving a permanent imprint on the public discourse. Prabodhankar Thackeray's ancestry extends to his son as a patriarch of a political family.

Bal Thackeray, his son, is the visionary founder of the Shiv Sena, a pro-Marathi Hindu nationalist political party.
