On July 10, 1979, Gong Ji-Cheol was born. He is a South Korean actor who goes by the stage name Gong Yoo. He is most famousfor his appearances in the television dramas Coffee Prince (2007) and Guardian: The Lonely and Great God (2016–2017), as well as the films Silenced (2011), Train to Busan (2016), and The Age of Shadows (2016–2017). (2016). His stage name is a mash-up of his father's surname "Gong" and his mother's surname "Yoo." Gong Yoo was a descendant of Chinese philosopher Confucius in 2017 and was part of the 79th generation of Confucius' descendants descended from the Gokbu Gong clan. Gong Yoo received a B.A. in theatre from Kyung Hee University. He began his show business career as a video jockey on Mnet in 2000 and made his acting debut in the TV series School 4 in 2001. Following that, Gong appeared in a variety of supporting parts in dramas and films, as well as hosting the music show during Music Camp in 2004. He earned his first leading role in SBS's Hello My Teacher in 2005, alongside Gong Hyo-jin. In 2006, this was followed by the romantic melodrama One Fine Day. Gong Yoo then appeared in MBC's romantic comedy Coffee Prince, proving his breakthrough role. Gong Yoo joined on January 14, 2008, for the obligatory duty, which concluded on December 8, 2009. He served for eight months on the frontlines in Cheorwon before being moved to the Defense Media Agency. He worked in the public relations department and hosted as a DJ for the army radio station. In December 2009, he was released. In Korea, he made his comeback in the romantic comedy Finding Mr. Destiny, a moderate box office success. Gong Yoo was appointed as a special representative of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) in Korea in November 2013 to coincide with the 24th anniversary of the adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC). Following his appointment, Gong Yoo has travelled throughout the world to raise awareness of the plight of children in developing nations. In 2016, he co-starred in the melodrama ‘A Man and a Woman’ with critically renowned actress Jeon Do-Yeon. He featured in the enormously popular zombie film Train to Busan, which had over 11 million admissions in South Korea.
