Krishan Chander

Krishan Chander is an Urdu novelist. He was born on 23 November 1914 in Bharatpur, Rajasthan. His father, Gauri Shankar Chopra, worked as a physician. He spent his childhood in Poonch, Jammu and Kashmir. He completed his primary education at Mahender-Garh. During the 1930’s, he enrolled at Forman Christian College in Lahore, Pakistan. He was an editor in the College House Magazine and used to write in English. 1932, his first Urdu short story, Sadhu, was published.

Simultaneously, he was engaged in revolutionary activities against British dominion. Chander pursues a Master’s in English and a Bachelor of Legislative Law (LLB). 1943, Chander’s literary prowess was spreading as many of his short story works were published, namely Khayaal, Nazzare, and Naghme Ki Maut. The success of the movie led to offers for him to serve as the screenwriter for Mamta (1966), Sharafat (1970), and Hamrahi (1974). His novel, Gaddar, explains the pains of partitioning India and Pakistan in 1947. Chander has written 20 books, 30 short stories, and numerous radio plays in Urdu and Hindi.

In 1966, the Soviet Union invited him and awarded him the Soviet Land Nehru Award. In 1973, the Films Division made a film biography on his life. In 1969, he received the Padma Bhushan. On 8 March 1977, he died due to a heart attack in Mumbai. He was married to Salma Siddiue, an Indian novelist. On 31 May 2017, the Postal Department issued a commemorative stamp worth Rs. 10 in his honour.
