Aliya Curmally's devotion to storytelling forced her into the Indian film industry. She worked for six years in production, distribution, and marketing on many Indian films operated in domestic and international markets. She turned to writing full-time in 2011. In January 2011, her first screenplay, a horror mystery, was taken up for domestic production. Her second screenplay is Toxic City, selected for the National Film Development Corporation of India and Binger Film lab workshop held at the Film Bazaar India, Goa. She was also one of four Indian writers selected for the Collectivist Writers' Apprenticeship program to associate Indian production companies with future writers to evolve material for projects across media formats.
She also wrote an English musical for the stage at the end of November 2011 as part of the Chivas Studio India. She co-authored a digital comic series floated at the end of 2012. She is a liberal arts graduate from Bryn Mawr College with a degree in the Growth and Structure of Cities. She got the British Council's Young Screen Entrepreneurs Award in 2008.
