Kamala Singha, better known as Kamala Jharia Bio coming soon... >> Read More... , was her real name. She resided in the Maharaja of Jharia's palace (now in Dhanbad district, the coal capital of India, Jharkhand state, India). Her parents most likely had a position at the palace. A highly well-known gramophone singer at the time by the name of Mr. K. Mallick was called to the palace to perform at Maharaja Shiva Prasad's wedding court. K. Mallick was chosen as the court singer in Jharia by the Maharaja because he impressed him with his performance. Kamala's singing talent was found by K Mallick while he was forced to spend some time back at Jharia. He then brought Kamala to Calcutta and introduced her to HMV officials. In 1930, she released her first record under a red label with the catalog number N 3137. The tunes were Nithur Nayan Baan Keno Hano, a Dadra, and Priya Jeno Prem Bhulo Na, a Ghazal.

Kamala was eventually transferred to Megaphone Company along with her tutor Tulsi Lahiri, however, this was only done as part of a business deal between HMV and Megaphone. Kamala later became a regular artist of HMV and its sister company Twin recordings. Her songs were also released by other music labels, including Columbia, Senola, and Pioneer. She began acting in films in 1933, and her debut Bengali movie was Jamuna Puliney (1933), which also happened to be Angurbala and Indubala actress Kanhopatra's first sound movie (1937). She sang in many other Indian languages than Bengali, including Hindi, Urdu, Marathi, Punjabi, Gujrati, and many others. At the time, no other performer sang in as many languages, which explains her all-Indian reputation and appeal. Kirtans and Ramprasadi, two Bengali devotional songs, are examples of her great accomplishments.

She appeared in movies such as Mantra Shakti (1935), Thikadaar (1940), Sonar Sangsar (1936), Bijoyini (1941), Bangalee (1936), Tarubala (1936), Night Bird (1934), Step Mother (1935), Devjani (1939), Pataal Puri (1935), Mastuto Bhai. She sang the playback vocals for Madhavi, the lead character in the 1935 Urdu film Selima, directed by Modhu Bose. Over three decades, she had a singing career. As a singer, Kamala has been connected to All India Radio since its start. She received a Gold Disc from The Gramophone Company of India in 1976 as a token of her lifetime accomplishments. She started her career as a radio personality and went on multiple tours of India, performing before the durbars of various local lords. She was honored as one of the living artists who had participated in All India Radio's beginnings in 1977, at the celebration of the station's golden jubilee. Kamala Jharia passed away on December 20th, 1979, after a lengthy battle with chronic asthma.
