Ila Basu is a popular Indian Bengali music artist. She was born in Howrah, Bengal Presidency, British India on 10 August 1936. She mainly contributed to Nazrul Geet and modern music. She was born into a family with good taste in music. At the early age of seven, she got the first position in classical music at the All India Music Conference held in Allahabad and also participated in the programme on the radio station of Mahishasurmardini. learned music from Nanigopal Mitra and later Dhirendrachandra Mitra, the legendary artist of Nazrul Geeti. She became a regular singer in Akashvani Kolkata. She had a good command of bhajans, ghazals, raag pradhan and Nazrul Geet. Nazrul Geet gained immense popularity due to her wonderful voice.
The song of Gaur Goswami Chand Dube Jay Jak Na song was released on a gramophone record. She worked as a playback singer in many Bengali and some Oriya and Assamese films. About two hundred songs were recorded on Gramophone. Some of her famous songs are Koto Raj Path Jono path church, Gan Furalo Jolsa Ghore, O Kalo Kokil Tumi Ar DekoNa (modern songs), Ore Nil Jamunar Jol, Tomar Ankhir Kasham Sakhi (Nazrul Geet). Du Bhai, Bipasha, and Sabarmati are playback songs by Ila. She has also received many awards for her significant contribution to the field of music.
