She was a journalistbefore the film industry. Afterthat, she was quit a journalism career. In 2009 she completed a screenwriting course at Film and Television Institute of India and then moved to Mumbai. A year later she worked on the 26 episode TV show Rishta.com, which can now found on Netflix. Soon after her script for Margarita With A Straw was picked up. Atika's 2020 releases include Chhapaak, the story of which she co-wrote with the director Meghna Gulzar. The Chhapaak movie is a Bollywood documentary film, directed by Meghna Gulzar. Deepika Padukone was played a lead role in this movie named Chhapaak.

This movie is based on the documentary of real incident who is attacked with acid in New Delhi, and the film is about a journey of a girl who surviving an acid attack in India. The acid has burnt her face. The Chhapaak movie story happened in capital to seek justice for a rape victim; an older man tries to draw the attention of a media reporter to a passport size photo of a young girl (presumably his daughter) who subjected to acid violence. It's a poignant scene which emphasizes how violence against woman in many forms continues to shock the country. After that she appeared a PIL for an acid ban in the country.
