His banner, ’Dharma Production’ was launched in 1976. The first film produced under this banner was Dostana which became an instant hit. Some of his best movies in 1980’s and 1990’s were Agneepath, Gumrah and Duplicate. With the release of such great movie that gained major appreciation by Indian audience, his production house became one of the biggest banners in Bollywood. Yash Johar was a famous producer of films in Bollywood. He was the founder of Dharma Productions Private Limited, an Indian production and distribution company, in the year 1979. They are known to be the parents of Karan Johar, an Indian film director, screenwriter, producer, actor, and costume designer. He died in Mumbai in the year 2004 at the age of 75 due to a chest infection. His son took over the company after his death.

Johar's career started in the year 1952 in the production house of Sunil Dutt named Ajanta Arts. Johar was associated with movies like "Yeh Raaste Hai Pyaar Ke", "Mujhe Jeene Do", etc. Mujhe Jeene Do is a famous Bollywood film under the direction of Moni Bhattacharjee. He helped the Indian actor Dev Anand in handling the production work of his movie named "Guide", which was a block buster at the box office.

He proceeded with the production house named Navketan Films of Dev Anand and took over the production work of different movies like "Prem Pujari", "Jewel Thief", and "Hare Rama Hare Krishna". Jewel Thief is a spy thriller Bollywood movie directed by the Indian filmmaker named Vijay Anand. "Prem Pujari" is a Bollywood film directed, produced and written by Dev Anand. Hare Rama Hare Krishna is an Indian film directed by Dev Anand.

Johar launched a banner to advertise Dharma Productions. "Dostana" was the first film produced by Dharma Productions. The film was made under the direction of one of the top producers named Raj Khosla, which was a block buster. The company undertook production of other movies like "Gumrah", "Agneepath", "Duplicate", etc. "Agneepath" was an Indian action drama film of 1990 directed by the famous Indian film director and producer named Mukul Anand. "Gumrah" was a Bollywood crime thriller and action drama film directed by the Indian film producer, and director named Mahesh Bhatt in the year 1993. The film "Duplicate" is a famous Bollywood action comedy movie which released in the year 1998.

In the same year, his son Karan Johar wrote and directed an Indian Bollywood romantic comedy-drama movie named "Kuch Kuch Hota Hai”. This movie brought great success to the company. The film won many awards like Best Film Award, Sansui Viewers' Choice Awards, Lux Zee Cine Awards, National Film e-Awards, and Bollywood Movie Awards. He participated in the distribution and production company named Red Chillies Entertainment, founded by Shah Rukh Khan, Bollywood actor, and Gauri Khan, his wife.
