Aruna Vasudev is an acclaimed expert on Asian cinema and an Indian writer, editor, director, artist, documentary filmmaker, and critic. 1936 saw the birth of Aruna Vasudev. She has a degree in film and censorship from the University of Paris. The term "mother of Asian cinema" has also been bestowed on her. Currently, Osian's-Connoisseurs of Art Private Limited is directed by Vasudev. She serves as one of the Indian Public Service Broadcasting Trustees as well.
In 1960, she began her career as a rookie working in Doordarsan's cosmetics rooms. In 1988, she started Cinemaya as a magazine showcasing Asian filmmakers. She established the well-known NETPAC, an organisation dedicated to promoting Asian cinema, in 1991. Being and Becoming: The Cinemas of Asia, co-edited by Vasudev in 2002, was the first book to provide a thorough account of the history and aesthetics of almost 30 Asian nations. Aruna led various initiatives, including the release of Tadao Sato's book Kenji Mizoguchi and the Art of Japanese Cinema, the first publication in English to provide readers with an intimate look at the body of work of this great artist.
In 1979, her PhD dissertation was turned into the book Liberty and Licence in the Indian Cinema. She has made over 20 documentaries as both a director and producer. Between 1967 and 1979, they were produced for War on Want, Belgian Television, Swedish Television, the Canadian International Development Agency, London's Films Division, and Doordarshan in India. She has received a plethora of national and international honours, including a Colombo Lifetime Achievement Award. She was on the Locarno Film Festival jury in 1989. 13 books have been edited by her or with her, and one of them, Jean-Claude Carriere's A la Recherche du Mahabharata, was translated into English concurrently with her work on the magazine.
