Subramanian Swamy is an Indian politician. He serves in the Rajya Sabha as the Member of the Parliament since 2016. The ace politician has been the president of the Janata Party, member of the Planning Commission, and a Cabinet Minister on the Chandra Shekhar Government. He took birth in Mylapore, Tamil Nadu on 15th September 1939.
The economist and statistician also acted as a member of the Group of Eminent People for the United Nations. Swamy has had several titles to his name; he became the Chairman of Commission on International Trade and Labour Standards set up by PV Narasimha Rao. He also served in the SCMS Group of Institutions and acted as the chairman.
He wrote the foreign affairs and dealt with Pakistan, Israel, and the People’s Republic of China. He took birth in Mylapore, Tamil Nadu on 15th September 1939. His father Sitaram Subramanian worked as a bureaucrat while his mother Padamthy did household work. He has three siblings, a younger brother Ram and two other younger sisters. When Swamy was only six months old, his family shifted to Delhi as his father worked in the Indian Statistical Service and acted as director of Central Statistical Institute.
Swamy went to the Hindu College, Delhi and got graduated with a Bachelors’ degree in Mathematics. Then, he earned a masters’ degree in Stats from the Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata. They got married in 1966. Now, they have two daughters. After, Ph.D. Swamy became an assistant professor of economics at Harvard; three years later he got promoted to associate professor. He was invited by economist Amartya Sen to work at Delhi School of Economics. But due to some issues with the government policies he did not take the post.
He became a Mathematics professor at Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi. In 1991, he resigned to join politics. He became the founding member of Janta Party and acted as its president till 2013. He got elected to Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha several times in his political career. Today, he is a representative of the Upper House and the Chairman of School of Management and Communication, Kochi.
