Ajit Jogi was an Indian politician & educationist, teacher, and a retired Civil Servant. His full name was Ajit Pramod Kumar Jogi. He was known for being the first Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh, India. He was born on April 29, 1946. His place of birth is Bilaspur, Central Provinces and Berar, British India (Now, Chhattisgarh, India). His fahter’s name was Shri Kashi Prasad Jogi. And mother’s name was Shrimati Kanti Mani. His nationality was Indian, and he belonged to the Christianity religion and Satnami (ST) caste. Ajit Jogi’s hobbies were Horse riding, swimming, reading, writing, trekking, yoga, and gliding. Ajit Jogi completed his Mechanical Engineering from Maulana Azad College of Technology, Bhopal.
He was the university gold medalist in 1968. Also, he was elected as the president of the Students’ Union. Also, he studied L.L.B. at Delhi University. In 1967, Ajit Jogi worked briefly as a lecturer at the Government Engineering College, Raipur, Chhattisgarh. In 1968, Ajit Jogi was selected for the Indian Police Service at the age of 22. Two years later, in 1970, he got selected for the Indian Administrative Services. He got posted in his home state, Madhya Pradesh. Ajit Jogi holds all India record of the longest-serving Collector/District Magistrate at Sidhi, Shahdol, Raipur, and Indore districts of Madhya Pradesh (From 1970 to 1986). Quitting the civil services in 1986, he joined the All India Congress Committee and got elected to Rajya Sabha.
President of the Congress Party Rajiv Gandhi was a guiding factor for joining politics. Since then, he has served in many elite positions in the Indian National Congress. In 2008, he was a Member of the Legislative Assembly of Chhattisgarh, representing the Marwahi constituency. Ajit Jogi married Dr. Renu Jogi on October 8, 1975. She is an Eye Specialist. His daughter took her life on May 12, 2000, when she was forbidden to marry her beloved. Ajit Jogi’s son is also a Politician. In 2016, the father-son duo left Indian National Congress and led a new party, “Chhattisgarh Janata Congress.” Ajit Jogi is an author of the books entitled “The Role of District Collector”, “Administration of Peripheral Areas”, “Drishtikon,” “Phoolkunwar,” and “Mor Madar ke thaap.” He was conferred with the “Most Outstanding Man” of the State Award by Gaints’ International in 1984.
He also worked for environmental protection, the development of tribal and folk art culture of India, and youth welfare, education, and employment. He served for minorities and backward classes and also helped physically challenged and leprosy patients. Ajit Jogi died on Friday afternoon, May 29, 2020, at the age of 74. A tamarind seed got stuck in his throat following a heart attack.
