Deepa Dasmunsi

Deepa Dasmunsi is an Indian Politician and artist. She is associated with the Indian National Congress (INC) party. She was born on July 15, 1960 to Shri Benoy Ghosh and Smt Durga Ghosh. Her birthplace is Kolkata, West Bengal, India. Her nationality is Indian, and she follows the Hinduism religion. She took a Master of Arts degree in Dramatics with a gold medal from the Rabindra Bharti University, Kolkata, West Bengal. Deepa Dasmunsi enjoys travelling, cooking, gardening, reading books, and listening to Indian classical music. She got married to the prominent Congress leader and former union minister Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi on April 15, 1994. The couple has a son named Priyadeep Dasmunsi, who lives in London. In 1984, Deepa Dasmunsi started her career as a theatre artist.

She was a talented stage performer. Her brilliant stage performances won her many awards in theatre. Further, she went on to work as a television artist. Also she has been a costume designer and art director for television serials and short films. She has also been the President of the Delhi Women Football association. In 2006, Deepa Dasmunsi put her first step into politics by contesting in the West Bengal state assembly elections. She successfully got elected from the Goalpokhar Vidhan Sabha constituency of West Bengal’s North Dinajpur district. On October 12, 2008, Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi suffered a massive stroke and paralysis. He could not speak or recognize anyone and went into the coma stage. In a few months were general elections, and his condition made Deepa Dasmunsi to take over her husband’s political career.

She fought in Raiganj Lok Sabha Constituency in 2009, and eventually won the 15th Lok Sabha elections. On August 31, 2009 she was appointed a member of the Committee on Personnel, Public Grievances, Law and Justice. She was the Union Minister of State, Urban Development in Manmohan Singh’s ministry from October 28, 2012 - May 16, 2014. Deepa Dasmunsi is also a social worker. She has worked for many disabled children and tribal people. Moreover, she has helped countless homeless street children. Her husband, Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi died on November 20, 2017, after being in the coma stage for nine long years.
