Narayan Gopal was a prominent Nepali singer and music composer known by the name of Swar Samrat in Nepal. He modified his voice in such a way that he could sing songs of any genre which made him the most respected Nepali singer in the music history. Narayan Gopal Guruwacharya was born on 4 October 1939 in the Newar family situated in Kilagal Tole, Kathmandu, Nepal. He was the son of Ram Gopal Gurubacharay, and mother Asha Devi Guruwacharya. He had ten siblings out of which there were four sisters and six brothers.
He completed his schooling and subsequently he attended Tri-Chandra College and got a degree of Bachelor of Arts in Humanities. He also attended Maharaja Sayajirao University, Baroda. He went to study classical music there but came back without completing the course. He got married in 1971 to Pemala Lama. Manik’s house became a musical center for them since his uncle was a keen instrumentalist. In fact, Manik was the one who recognized the singing potential that Narayan had. He gave a voice trial at Radio Nepal after his friend Prem Dhoj requested him to do so. He passed the trial after singing Panchiko Pankha ma dhartikodiyo. The song was composed by Prem Dhoj. Narayan’s first ever public performance was at Tri Chandra College’s 40th anniversary. His friends Manik and Prem started their musical journey together and during that time, Narayan composed original six songs.
The songs included four songs for a single voice and other two for duet singing. The songs were recorded in Kolkata and became well-known within Nepal as well as India. Narayan became the manager of Rashtriya Naach Ghar soon after joining. He was the editor for the first three versions of the musical journal named Bageena.
He also became Sanskrit Sansthan’s managing director and advisor for Ministry of Communications. He had written a play which was named Kanchi Masyang. He passed away on 5 December 1990 in Bir Hospital, Kathmandu due to complications of diabetes. He had received various awards for Best Composition, Best Singer, Gorkha Dakshin Bahu, Ratna Record Award, Indra Rajy aLaxmi Award, Urbashi Rang Award, etc.
