Ash King, also known as Ashutosh Ganguly, is a singer born on 3 August 1984. He was born in London to a Bengali father and a Gujarati mother. At the age of 25, he bagged his first Bollywood debut as playback singer debut in Rakesh Omprakash Mehra’s, Delhi 6 movie. Ashutosh Ganguly, whose name was shortened to Ash King as it could not fit in one line for a CD cover, hails from a background of musical artists. His discovery of music at a young age triggered his special relationship with musical notes. His grandfather, the late Brajendralal Gangopadhyay who was a freedom fighter, was also the first Indian music teacher in the classical category who had the chance to compose music with Rabindranath Tagore at his home and school named Shantiniketan.
In the sixties his father Shankar Gangopadhyay, who was a classical singer, used to perform with Ravi Shankar. Moreover, he worked with Hemanta Mukhopadhyay a Bengali film director. Ash King spent a childhood listening and discovering musical artists. He used to play instruments like ‘dhol’ and ‘dholak’ but never had any plan to pursue music as a career. His interest in music developed when he started attending Open Mics. He later joined the Gospel Choir where he got influenced by Stevie Wonder, Al Green and Luther Vandross. Thus he realized his passion for music and wanted to become a singer. So, he left school at the age of 16 and started training with his father. At 25 the Delhi 6 singer was introduced to A.R. Rahman, who was at that time working on
, by some friends in England.
King was asked to sing a few lines in Hindi but being so nervous at that moment, he sang Six Month, Eight days, Twelve Hours, a gospel R&B influenced song. On the spot, the maestro Rahman proposed him to fly to Chennai. After two weeks, he was in AR Rahman’s studio recording ‘Dil gira dafanta’ for Delhi 6. Since his debut, Ash King became one of the most recognized singers of Bollywood. After recording the Delhi 6 song, he went back to London and worked with
on the Bad Romance album on a remix of
. He also wrote and composed Love is Blind which he performed with singer Ramzi and Look for me with the rapper
and thus creating another success in the music industry. In 2011, he sang at the Glastonbury Festival for BBC and at the BBC London Mela.
In 2013 he did a stage show with
, a Sufi Bollywood singer for South bank Center Concert in London. He was also part of MTV India’s prestigious MTV Unplugged for Series 2. Ash King simultaneously worked with Indian compositors and gave us great music such as Te Amo in the film
Dum Maaro Dum
; I Love you from Bodyguard; Suna Aisha from the movie Aisha and many more. His recent Bollywood song was Alizeh from Ae Dil Hai Muskhil and latest composition was for a Bangladeshi film. He being half Bengali sang several songs in Bengali such as Ure Geche, Dekhte Bou, Chachi Toke and Jeno Tomar Kache. The star will now appear in a Gujarati song named Udi Udi from the movie Last Chance.
