Anand Varma spent his early years playing in the woods behind his childhood home in Atlanta, Georgia. He used to shoot photos with his dad’s old camera when he was a teenager. Anand attended U.C. Berkeley to study integrative biology, and he currently uses photography to explain the scientific rationale behind topics ranging from hummingbird biomechanics to honeybee health. He has photographed several pieces for National Geographic Magazine after being awarded an Early Career Grant by the magazine in 2010. Among them is the cover story “Mindsucker,” which was publishes in 2014.
