Tillotama Shome is an Indian actress who is known for her performance in the movie
Monsoon Wedding directed by
Mira Nair. Shome was born in Kolkata. Since her father was in Indian Air Force, Shome was raised in different states. After completing her high school education, Shome went to Lady Shri Ram College ion Delhi. There she joined the Arvind Gaur’s theater group. She went to the United States for pursuing her post-graduation in educational theater from
New York University. After completing her post-graduation, she worked as a teaching artist at the University of New York. She taught theater in a US Prison to third-degree convicts. She stayed in New York for four years. In 2008, she returned to India and took up a residence in Mumbai. She was approached by Mira Nair to feature in her film Monsoon Wedding. She portrayed the role of Alice in the movie. After that, she was offered the role of Deepa in the movie Shadows of Time directed by Florian Gallenberge. She also appeared in an Australian movie named The Waiting City directed by Claire McCarthy, in which she played the role of a nun. She also starred in a movie named Gangor directed by Italo Spinelli, which was based on Mahashweta Devi’s novel. She played the role a social worker in the movie. She also appeared in
Tasher Desh directed by Qaushiq Mukherjee.
She portrayed the role of Mrs. Ahmadi in the movie Shanghai. The movie was directed by
Dibakar Banerjee and received much recognition from the viewers. Her acting skills were titled as the most heart-breaking performances. In 2013, she approached for the movie Quissa. Shome played the role of a girl Kanwar, who was raised as a boy. She won the Best Actress Award in New Horizons Competition at the Abu Dhabi Film Festival. Some her most successful works include the portrayal of Bimla in the movie Sold and the role of Sister Tessila in the movie The Walking City.Apart from this, she also worked in some Nepali movies. Some of her notable works in the Nepali Cinemas include the role of Radha in the movie Sahasi Chori. In 2015, she appeared in the movie The Letters where she played the role of Kavitha Singh. Shome is currently working on an English movie A Death in The Gunj.
