He was born on January 4, 1981, in Allahabad to Shakuntala Gupta and National Hockey Player Om Babu. He had four siblings and had a modest upbringing. He received his schooling from Birla Vidya Mandir situated in Nainital and completed his graduation from Allahabad University. The acting was always on his mind and was his passion since his childhood days.
Karan played his debut role in Amrut Kumbh, a television film, where he portrayed the role of Lakshmana. Before moving his base in Mumbai, he also joined National School of Drama. In his starting days at Mumbai, he joined Ekjute, a theatre group. Later, he got his first role in the television serial 'Chittod Ki Rani Padmini Ka Johur'. Then after he gave a splendid performance in the serial, 'Kabhi Toh Milke Sab Bolo' which made him win many awards and lots of praises.
His debut movie on-screen was Gunday. Subsequently, he did Kick. His role in the movie Baby of a spy gave him a lot of recognition, following since he has been getting good roles. He has also acted in Bhojpuri and Bengali film. He participated in a competition, All India Shot Play at National level. He loves martial arts and is a black belt holder in Hapkido.
