Indeevar has been one of the well-known Hindi Film lyricists for four decades, from the 1940s to the 1990s. His original name was Shyamlal Bapu Rai. He was born on 1 January 1924 at Barua Sagar of Jhansi district, Uttar Pradesh. He was brought up in Barua Saar of Jhansi District and moved to Mumbai to pursue a career as a lyricist. He has written a thousand songs in over 300 films in a career span of four decades.
Indeevar has worked with various music composers like Jatin-Lalit, Kalyanji-Anandji Adesh Shrivastav, and Roshan. He has written songs from peppy numbers like Aap Jaisa Koi Meri Zindagi Me Aaye to Philosophical songs like Zindagi Ka Safar Hai ye Kaisa Safar from the film Safar. He has also wrote patriotic songs like Dulhan Chali and Preet Jaha Ki Reet Sada from Manoj Kumar's film Purab and Paschim.
His songs such as Ek Tu Na Mila, Samjauta Gamon Se Kar Lo, Behna Ne Bhai Ki Kalai Se, Dil Aisa Kisi Ne Mera Toda, and Pyaar Ka Tofa Tera were nominated many times for the Filmfare Awards. He received the Best Lyricist Filmfare Award for the song Dil Aisa Kisi Ne Mera Thoda in 1976.
