Winnifred Jong is a Canadian filmmaker, screenwriter and a producer who was born in Hong Kong and grew up in Toronto, Canada. She is a very private person who worked hard to be in her current status. Winnifred attended a film program conducted by Ryerson University, where Jong sculpted her skills to be a filmmaker. At the starting of her career, she created short films. Her works include The Offer (2003) and Beefcake (2005), which explored themes of identity and relationships. In 2009, Jong made her feature film debut with the independent drama Lucky 7, which she wrote, directed, and produced. The story revolves around the world of Chinese-Canadian women, who became involved in the world of gambling, to pay off their debts.
Lucky 7 premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and received applause for its bare realism and compelling characters. By this time, she had established her career in the industry with her unique storytelling style. She has directed episodes of shows like Murdoch Mysteries, Frankie Drake Mysteries, and Coroner. She also has worked on several short films, including The Offer, which has won several awards. The film premiered at the South By Southwest film festival and was well-received for its strong performances. She was considered in the Canadian Screen Awards for the best direction in a Drama Series, considering her work Coronor (2020).
She wrote the script and directed the comedic web series Tokens, becoming the first ever short-form series considered for Best Ensemble at the ACTRA Awards and she won four Canadian Screen Award nominations and winning for Best Direction. She burst into the US television market as the producer, and director of The Kings Of Napa, which premiered in January 2022. Her subsequent credits include Kung Fu (WB/CW), Jane (AppleTV), Firefly Lane(Netflix), and My Life With The Walter Boys. Jong is also an advocate for diversity and inclusion in the film industry. She has actively participated in organizations such as Women in Film and Television and she has spoken about the need for more excellent representation of under-represented groups both in front and behind the camera.
