Prem Vaidya was born on February 26, 1927. He was a director, cinematographer, scriptwriter, and producer. His award-winning works include Veer Savarkar, a biographical documentary on freedom fighter Vinayak Damodar Savarkar. In 1954, he became a part of the Government of India’s Films Division as an assistant cinematographer. Moreover, Prem Vaidya has also directed movies like Kala Pani: A Pilgrimage, Veer Savarkar, Neelam Sanjeeva Reddy: President of India, Go Slow, Rhythms of a New Life, etc.
Apart from directing, he was also a good writer. He wrote many articles for newspapers and international magazines in English, Hindi, and Marathi. Memorable Assignments on Moving Images and Savarkar A Lifelong Crusader were published by the National Film Archive of India and New Age International Publishers, respectively. Prem Vaidya was honored with Ezra Mir Award for Lifetime Achievement by the Indian Documentary Producers Association in 2003. He breathed his last on July 10, 2014.
