Dhvani Desai is a world-renowned poet and an animation director. She was born in Mumbai, India. Almost everyone from her family has a career in literature and arts. She is the granddaughter of Surendrarai Bhaurai Desai, a social reformer and a lawyer, who fought for the rights and upliftment of the local tribals. In fact, the primary and secondary schools have included his works in their syllabus. Her father, Dr.Sudhir Desai, is also a talented poet and scholar while her mother, Tarinibahen Desai, is a Gujarathi short story writer. Her brother and sister, Sanskar Desai and Sanskritirani Desai, is a documentary movie maker and a poet respectively. As a child, Dhvani enjoyed painting and writing poetry.
She would also take part in several plays and has appeared on radio and TV show as a child artist. She holds a degree in Bachelor of Science in Statistics from Elphinstone College, Mumbai, Master of Business Administration, Narsee Monjee Institute of Management and Higher Studies, and post-graduation in Computer Management from Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies. She went to Government Law College, Mumbai. In 1991, she started to work at a computer animation studio, as a trainee. There, she attained the basic knowledge of animation and made to realize her passion for it.
Soon, she joined Xavier's Institute of Communication in Mumbai to learn 3D animation. She then began working for a leading computer studio of its time named Computer Graphiti. Eventually, she resigned from there and established Metamorphosis, her own company. She then collaborated with her brother and directed The Mahatma, a movie, which made the rounds at several prestigious film festivals. Her other works include Manpasand — The Perfect Match. She has tried to present the diverse and copious culture of India through her motion pictures. Film and Television Institute of India, Pune, has invited her many times to conduct workshops on animation cinema.
She has won the Women's Achiever Award for Excellence in the Field of Animation, Rotary Award for Excellence in Animation, Girnar Award, and much more. Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances, and Pension, has felicitated her. In numerous occasions, New York Festivals has also invited her to be a part of International Grand Jury and International Juror for the Film and Video category. She was also the member of the selection and executive committee of the Indian Academy of Advertising Film Art, First Digital Children Film Festival, Children's International Film Festival, and Indian Documentary Producers Association awards.
