Anjali Monteiro

Anjali Monteiro is a Mumbai-based documentary filmmaker, media educator, and researcher born in Pune, Maharashtra . At the Tata Institute of Social Sciences' School of Media and Cultural Studies, she serves as Dean and Professor. She has co-directed about 35 documentaries with K.P. Jayasankar on a variety of issues. Inocencio Gracias Monteiro, an army engineer, and Sofia Cordeiro Monteiro, a teacher, both of Goa, were her parents. In 1975, she graduated with a bachelor's degree in psychology from Sophia College for Women of Bombay University, and in 1977, she earned a master's degree in economics from Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics of Pune University. Under the direction of renowned academic Professor Ashis Nandy, she earned her Ph.D. in sociology from Goa University and the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies in 1994.

Between 1979 and 1983, she worked in development communication at the Xavier Institute of Communications in Mumbai where she taught at the undergraduate level. In 1989, she wed K.P. Jayasankar, a colleague, and the two became parents to a daughter. The University of California, Berkeley, University of Technology, Sydney, and Lahti Institute of Design in Finland are just a few of the institutions and universities where Monteiro has served as a visiting professor for media and design, both in India and abroad. Under the guidance of Prof. Ashis Nandy, Monteiro's PhD dissertation, State, Subject and the Text: The Construction of Meaning in Television, featured an anthropological investigation of television audience reception in a working-class neighbourhood in Goa in the late 1980s. She presently focuses on documentary cinema, censorship, critical theory, and concerns of media representation in her writing in the broad field of media and cultural studies.
