He was a director, producer, politician and former Member of Parliament. He was a versatile and dynamic personality. He was courageous and never afraid to raise his voice against injustice. He was born on 1 May 1928 in Jodhpur, Rajasthan. He completed his graduation Bachelor in Arts from Jaswant College, Jodhpur. He began his career as a teacher. He was having the great interest in literature and writing. Along with writing he also translated several books from English to Hindi which included famous literary work of personalities like Maxim Gorky, Joseph Stalin, Mao Zedong and Liu Shaoqi.
From his literary work, it can be said that he was greatly influenced by Communism policy. He was a staunch supporter of Communism. He was dedicated towards the upliftment of weaker section of society. He always raised his voice against the injustice prevailing towards the poor and weaker section of society.He decided to join politics so that he can contribute more effectively in the uplifting of society. He joined Indian National Congress party.
He became Member of Parliament (1968-70) in 4th Lok Sabha session from Barmer Constituency of Rajasthan. Consecutively for the second time, he was elected as Member of Parliament (1971-77) in 5th Lok Sabha session from Barmer Constituency. He left the Congress party as he was against the decision of Indira Gandhi former Prime Minister and Congress party with their decision to impose National Emergency. He openly criticized government policies which violated Fundamental Rights of people. He joined Janata Party which was then led by Morarji Desai and Jai Prakash Narayan.
In Elections which were held after National Emergency, he was elected as Member of Parliament to 6th Lok Sabha session from Pali constituency. He also produced and directed few movies like Sant Gyaneshwar which was a religious movie in 1965. In 1967 he directed and produced another movie Raton Ka Raja. In 1977 he directed his most controversial film Kissa Kursi Ka which was produced by BP Joshi. The plot of the movie was a satire on the Indian politics of that time.
It was based on former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, and his son Sanjay Gandhi Sanjay Gandhi, an Indian television and theater ac >> Read More... . It was based on Sanjay Gandhi and his influence in policy framework and also within the party. But the movie was not allowed to release and finally, it was banned due to the imposition of National Emergency period. All the prints of the movie were picked up from Censor Board Office by some goons. During that time rumors spread that print of this film was taken to Maruti factory where all the prints were burned.
A complaint was filed against this and Government appointed Shah Commission for inquiry. In the reports of Commission Sanjay Gandhi and former Information and Broadcasting Minister V.C.Shukla was found guilty. They both were sentenced to imprisonment for two- year term. Later this decision was overturned. He died at the age of 74 on 24th April 2001 at Escort Hospital in Delhi.
