Born and brought up in Sanawar district of Himachal Pradesh, he went to The Lawrence School, Sanawar as a kid. In 2000, he graduated from Brooks College of Design, Los Angeles, with an Associate of Arts (A.A.) degree in Fashion Design and Merchandising, where he also won the Best Fashion Illustration Award. Over the years, Nakai has managed and owned many brand design stores in Delhi, Singapore, and Los Angeles.

Besides his projects in Bollywood, he was the Principal Design Consultant at Hari Nakai Fashion and Costume Design for nine years before acting as the Head of Design at Jinaam Fashion World (2016-18).
