Gopi Krishna was an Indian actor, dancer, and choreographer, who was born on August 22nd,1935. Gopi took birth into a family full of Kathak dancers. Gopi’s maternal grandfather was a Kathak teacher named Pandit Sukhdev Maharaj. Gopi Krishna started training under his grandfather when he was eleven years old. He also took lessons from Shambhu Maharaj. Apart from Kathak, he learned Bharatanatyam from Govind Raj Pillai and Mahalingam Pillai. Gopi suffered from chronic asthma, but still, he continued to showcase his dance art. He received the title of Nataraj which is known to be the God of Dance, at the age of 15 in All Bengal Music Conference. At the age of seventeen, Gopi was among the youngest choreographers in Hindi movie industry when he signed to choreograph dances in the film Saqi for Madhubala. In 1955, he featured in his first movie Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baaje. In the movie, he portrayed Girdhar, who was a talented young dancer. His love for his partner destroys his dancing career. The movie was successful and contributed to reinventing public interest in classical dance. In the 1960s and 1970s, he visited India's border posts, and entertained soldiers with actor Sunil Dutt's Ajanta Arts Troupe. Later, Gopi formed the Nateshwar Bhavan academy for dance and the Nateshwar Nritya Mandir. In 1975, he awarded Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian award by the Indian government. Gopi created a world record by continuously dancing Kathak for nine hours twenty minutes.

He also featured in a small role in the legendary television series Mahabharat. Gopi took birth on August 22nd, in the year 1935 in the city of Calcutta and passed away on February 18th, in the year 1994 due to a heart attack in the city of Bombay. Gopi was a member of the Banaras Gharana style of Kathak. He included many elements from Bharatnatyam and Kathakali in his dance. Gopi was married to Kathak dancer Savitri in 1964.
