Ajit was an actor as well as a director. He worked in the Punjab and Hindi film industries. His famous works are Pratiggya (1975), Meharbaani (1982), and Putt Jattan De (1983). Before coming into the film industry he worked at the Gurdaspur railway station. Ajit Singh Deol is also known as Kumar Ajit, Kunwar Ajit, Kunwar Ajeet Singh, Kanwar Ajit, Kanwar Ajeet. He was widely known as Kunwar Ajit Singh. He made his debutant role as a leading man in Soldier as Thakur Daler Singh (1969) after his first film in 1965 in the film "Chilman" under the name Abhay was shelved. He has acted and directed many shelved movies like "Sheroo Lootera"(1978), "Sabse Bada Paap" (1984), etc.

Ajith Singh Deol was undergoing gall bladder treatment. He died on October 23 2015 in Mumbai due to health issues. In the presence of his family and close friends, his funeral took place at Pawan Hans in Juhu Mumbai.
