Varsha Mahendra Adalija is a Gujarati writer, novelist, playwright, negotiator, and dramatist. She was born on 10th April 1940 in Bombay presidency, British India. Her father was a Gujarati novelist, and she belonged to Jam Nagar. She completed her bachelor’s in Gujarati and Sanskrit from Mumbai University in 1960. She did her master’s in sociology in 1962. She won a scholarship at the National School of Drama. She worked as the spokesperson of Aakaashvani in Mumbai from 1961 to 1964. She got married to Mahendra Adalija in 1965. She was the editor of Sudha, a weekly magazine in 1973 and Gujarati Femina, which was another women’s magazine from 1989 she was an executive officer for the Gujjar Arati Saha Parishad since the year 1978. She has explored the colonies of lepers and the Adivasi community. She has written 40 books, including 22 novels and seven volumes of short stories. She has won many awards such as the Sahitya Academy Award in 1995 for her novel, Ansar. She was also the recipient of the Soviet Land Nehru Award in 1976, Gujarati Sahitya Academy Award in 1977, 1979, 1980 Gujarati Sahitya Parishad Award 1972, 1975, and the KM Munshi Award in 1997 she received the Ranjithram Suvarna Chandrak in the year 2005. She has also received the Nandshankar Mehta, Chandra Saroj Pathak Prize and Ramnarayan Pathak Short Story Prize for story writing.
