Prabhulal Dwivedi, also known as Prabhulal Dyaram Dwivedi, was born on 15-11-1892 in Virpur (Saurasht) district, Rajkot, Gujarat. He was a playwright and had enriched the Gujarati theater through many of his plays. He has composed many dramas with mythological and social themes. His compositions mainly included the Moolashankar Moolani’s style. His social dramas were with national spirit, the mythological importance of India, and princely heroism, and they played a vital role in exposing hypocrisy and the decay of society.
His hometown is Jetpur. He has a diploma in Mechanical Engineering. He worked in Karachi., leaving his hometown. His father’s name is Dayaram, and his mother is Phulbai. He was married to Damayanti and had a son named Vinayakanth. It is that he had four daughters. Prabhulal Dwivedi started working in a drama company, which was a stigma in the eyes of his family. Before knowing that he was a writer, not an actor, his family disowned him.
After leaving Karachi, he stayed in Ahmedabad and turned to professional playwriting. His social dramas include - Bell of the Cart, Shambhumela, Bending the Children, Bending the Elders, Gentleman Who, One Abla, The Color of Love, For Wealth, The Matter of Power, Ageism, Bare Eyed, With Time, Across the Front, Golden Sun, Seduction of Splendor and Deshdeepak. His historical Plays include - Akshayraj, Sagarapati, Sambharraj, Kumarpal, Samar Kesari, Kalivahan, Prithviraj Chauhan, Samudragupta, and Malvapati Moonj.
His Mythological dramas include - Arunodaya, Satyaprakash, Devi Sankata (Hothal Padmani of the original ‘Vairati’), Sravankumara, Sati Vatsala, Shankaracharya, Shalivahana and Vidya Variddhi Bharvi. In 1951, in the celebration of his 60th birthday, his famous work, Vidya Variddhi Bharvi, based on the life of Kavi Bharvi, was performed. After this, he relocated to Rajkot but forcibly returned to Bombay, where he died 11 years later, on 31-01-1962. Prabhulal has also written his autobiography. He was given the Best Dramatist award by the government of India in 1961.
