Chinu Modi is a well-known Gujarati and Urdu poet, novelist, story writer, and critic. He was born on 30 September 1939 in Vijapur, Gujarat, and his original name was Chinu Chandulal Modi. His parents, Chandulal and Shashikantaben, belong to Kadi, a municipal corporation in Gujarat. China completed his early education in Vijapur and secondary education in Dholka, Sheth Hasanali High School. In 1958, he completed his Bachelor's in Gujarati and History from St. Xaviers College in Ahmedabad and master's in Gujarati and History from Gujarat University in 1961. In 1968, Chinu Modi completed his Ph.D. from Gujarat Vidyapeeth under the guidance of Mohanbhai Shankarbhai Patel in his research work on Gujarati Bhashama Khandakavya. Chinu Modi served as a professor in the colleges like H. A. Arts College in Ahmedabad, Swaminarayan Arts College in Ahmedabad, Mansa College, Sabarmati Arts College, and L. D. Arts College from 1965 to 1978. He worked as a scriptwriter Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), Ahmedabad, from 1975 to 1977. From 1994 to 2001, he worked as a reader at the School of Languages, Gujarat University, and served as Dean-in-charge of the Department of Journalism at the MS University, Baroda. Chinu Modi was a prominent writer and poet who wrote several famous plays, stories, poetries, and ghazals under his penname Irshad. Vyatan in 1963 was his first short poetry collection, followed by Urnanabh (1974), Shapit Vanma (1976), Kshano Na Mahelma Darpan Ni Galima (1975), Inayat (1996), Shwetsamudro (2001), Agha Pachha Shwas (2007), and many more.

His works were mainly written in Gujarati and later translated to Hindi, English, and other regional languages. One of his notable creations was a long narrative poem based on Nalakhyan of Mahabharata and a long narrative poem in Akhana style titled Kalakhyan (2003). He is most popularly known for writing ghazals style poetries, and one of his creations of Muktak poetry is Amrut Muktako in 2016. Chinu has written and directed several plays in Gujarati, like Dayal Na Pankhi in 1967, his first one-act play, followed by Callbell (1973), Hukam Malik (1984), Ashwamedh (1986), Raja Midas (1992), Khalifano Vesh Yani Aurangzeb (1993), Memory Lane (2008), and many more. His first novel has published in 1966, an autobiography with Shaila Majmudar.

He published a short story collection titled Dabi Muththi Jamani Muththi (1986) and Chhalang (1997). Chinu Modi edited Ghazal poetry collections like Gami Te Ghazal (1976). Chinu Modi has awarded the Ushnas Prize in 1982, Kalapi Award in 2000, Transmedia Award in 2004, Narsinh Mehta Award in 2008, and Vali Gujarati Award in 2010. In 2013, he received one of the most prestigious awards from the Indian Government, the Sahitya Akademi Award for Gujarati Writers in New Delhi. He died on 19 March 2017 due to multiple organ failure at his home in Ahmedabad. Chinu donated his body to NHL Medical College.
