Rasbihari Desai was a veteran Indian Gujarati vocalist, music-maker, and music composer of Hindi and Gujarati songs. He was also known as Rasbhai. He was born on June 23, 1935, in Patan, Gujarat, India. He was graduated with a Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Physics. He belonged to the musical Nagar family in Patan (North Gujarat). His grandmother, Mahalaxmiben, was a singer and used to recite the entire Ramcharitmanas. His father, Ramanlal Desai, was also a singer known as Meghani of Patan. His mother’s name is Durgaba Desai. He married Vibha Vaishnav in 1964. His wife is a retired income tax officer and a national-level singer in All India Radio. His wife also received the Best Female Playback Singer Award in 1989 for the film ‘Kashino Dikro.’

He had performed over 1000 duets with his wife around the world. Rasbihari Desai did not take any formal training in music. He started singing at an early age. He was put on the ‘A’ category list of the vocalists of All India Radio at the age of 19. He was regularly invited to concerts all over India, including AIR and Doordarshan. He also taught Ceptians on acoustics as a Physics professor at Bhavan’s College in the city. He was mainly invited to train students for inter-university events. However, he started “Shruti Vrund” to popularize Gujarat Sugam music & poetry among the common person in 1961. It was the group of non-professional proficient trained singers. The group successfully organized Sugam Sangeet concerts for more than four decades and gave over 300 performances in Gujarat, Delhi, Nagpur, Mumbai, Kolkata, and other places. Rashbihari Desai was invited to give speeches, lectures, and demonstrations at many prestigious seminars, conferences, and workshops on music, including M.S. University, Baroda on “Kavya Sangeet,” the University of Texas at Austin, the USA on “Characteristics of India Music,” and many. His first film, “Kashino Dikro,” fetched him a best playback singer award from the Government of Gujarat in 1979. In 1981, he received honorary membership from the Gujarati Association of Detroit in the US for his remarkable contribution to music. He received the ‘Triveni’ award by Triveni Vadodara for outstanding contribution to music in 1984, Gaurav Puraskar by the Government of Gujarat in 1992, ‘Anart’ award by Mehsana in 1995, and Vishishta Dirgha Prasaran Seva award by All India Radio in 1998. Rashbihari Desai lived for 77 years and died on October 6, 2012, due to a heart attack at Jivaraj Mehta Hospital in Ahmedabad.
