Protiva Bose was a prominent singer and writer during the British Raj. She was born on 13 March 1915 in Dhaka. Her parents named her “Ranu Shome” but when she got married to a Bengali writer, as a custom, her name changed to “Protiva Bose.” She is the grandmother of the well-known Bengali writer “Kankabati Dutta.”
Protiva Bose first made her first ‘Gramophone Record’ at the age of 12. In her singing career, she has sung many popular songs and was appreciated by many great poets like “Narzul Islam,” “Rabindranath Tagore” and singer “Dilip Kumar Roy.” They were so impressed by her voice, that they taught her their songs. She was also a student of “Ustad Gul Mohammad Khan.” In 1940, she gave up singing to start her writing career
She was one of the most successful writers of her age. She wrote 200 books which were successful and admired among readers. Her first book was “Monolima” which was pubfull-body 1940. Many of her books have been adapted into movies. In 1972, she got full body paralysis. It was the reaction to the anti-rabies shot, which was essential for her because she was rescuing stray dogs with rabies. She died on 13 October 2006 in Kolkata, because of the illness.
