Somu has a younger brother whose name is Amal Sarkar. Somu grew up in a middle-class family. She loves to travel and dance. She studied at Banshihari Balika Vidyalaya. She did her B.A. in Mass Communication from Gour Mahavidyalaya, Malda, West Bengal. She did her M.A. from Jadavpur University.
