Nammakam was a serial that depicted the sanctity of the bond between a brother and a sister. Vasanth is a rich industrialist, who despite being in a great position, adored and did anything for his little sister Aruna. While looking for a suitor for Aruna, their family learns that Aruna was in love with a guy named Prem. Prem was a poor guy, whose father was merely a mechanic in a car repair shop. Aruna’s mother didn’t approve of their relationship. Vasanth went to great lengths to get her to agree to let Aruna marry the love of her life. Once Aruna’s mother agreed, Prem’s father put a condition that Prem’s sister Jayanthi needs to get married before he does. Vasanth then wed Jayanthi despite being in love with another girl named Nandini, so that Aruna and Prem could get married. Both Vasanth and Jayanthi knew that their marriage was a ploy to get their siblings married.

Vasanth and Jayanthi’s relationship was nothing but a marriage certificate. They both lived under one roof without properly exchanging a conversation. Jayanthi was hopeful that one day Vasanth would accept her as his wife. Nandini was furious at Vasanth for getting married to another woman. She tried all the tricks in the book to get Vasanth to divorce Jayanthi. They surprised the viewers by not letting Nandini come between them and worked out their marriage. This daily soap attracted many viewers. The title track of the serial, sung by S. P. Balasubramanyam, is still etched into the hearts of its viewers.

Nammakam serial story revolves around the central character Vasanth; he is a wealthy industrialist and down to earth personality. He has a little sister, and he can do anything to make her happy. Her name is Aruna, her family searches for a man who suits her. While searching, they got to know that Aruna is in love with a guy named Prem. Prem was not rich; his father was working as a mechanic in a car repair shop. However, Aruna's mother did not accept their relationship because of his financial status. Vasanth knows that his sister will feel sad for her whole life if she loses Prem. So Vasanth tries a great extent to make his mother accept their marriage. Finally, he succeeds in convincing his mother, but another problem arises from Prem's father.

Prem's father told him that before Prem's wedding, he needs to do his daughter's marriage. Her name is Jayanthi, so unwillingly, he accepts that he will marry her. However, he is already in love with a girl Nandini. Despite his passion, he married Jayanthi to make Aruna and Prem’s wedding done. However, Vasanth and Jayanthi relationship is just an agreement; there is no love between them. They live like a stranger living under one roof; even if they share one room, they never have any conversations. However, Jayanthi believes that someday he will change his mind and accept her as his wife.

Meanwhile, Vasanth's girlfriend, Nandini, who is furious about Vasanth's decision to marry another woman, wants to break their relationship. She tries numerous tricks to make Vasanth divorce Jayanthi.
