Manam is a 2005 Tamil television series that aired on channel Vasantham. The show exposes various evils present in our society, and within ourselves. It showcases the significant themes of depression, anxiety, infidelity, love and whatnot! The drama series was produced by Vengadachalam R. The star cast for the show included Naser, Kogila, Vanitha Kumari, Selvarajoo, Prasannawathani P. The first season premiered with seven mindblowing episodes, exposing the atrocities of people and society.

The plot is unique, within each episode, we are presented with a new issue and we see the eventual outcomes for the characters. The most beautiful thing about the show is that it offers the psychological inner and outer battles of the human mind through various characters. As these ordinary people deal with life, we delve into their world with each episode and try to relate to their feelings. Hence the show is pretty relatable.

The characters change with every episode, except our protagonist, Srikanth, the psychiatrist who saves everyone’s lives, or at least tries his best to. He faces all sorts of patients throughout the season and does his best to provide them with a sense of hope and faith. Now, as we know that the show displays ‘human emotions’ at its best and worst, we will now look at some of the unique stories in the first season. Two stories aim to portray the disasters of pressurising parents and their pressurised children.

Episode one revolves around the life of Radha, a  young, hardworking student who is a topper at the top college. Her parents want her to study medicine at NIS. She is so focused on her goal that she drains all her efforts into studying. Little did she know that all of this pressure would turn into her worst nightmare someday. On the day of the exam, she gets an anxiety attack due to performance pressure given to her by her parents. Dr. Srikanth says she has to be admitted immediately, but her father refuses. Afterwards, she tries to commit suicide, but Srikanth talks her out of it.

Episode four is somewhat similar to the previous story in the sense that here, as well, parents are the ones who led to the downfall of the child’s fate. Nanda is a young boy who loves to play soccer, but when he gets low marks in an exam, he’s denied to pursue his dream to be a professional soccer player. He’s highly heartbroken and tries to run away but meets with an accident and becomes paralyzed. Srikanth helps him by giving him enough motivation by dictating Thiru’s story.

The last episode is quite interesting. It features the love tragedy of Siva and Nithya. Being completely in love, the couple wishes to marry even though their parents are against it, but they marry anyway. One day, they meet with an accident on the bike. Siva wakes up and is told by his parents that Nithya is dead. Dr. Srikanth tries to make him move on in life and get rid of his depression. But one day he visits Nithya’s parents’ house to apologise for everything. To his surprise, he finds Nithya in a room being disfigured. He kills himself, and Srikanth is sued for negligence.
