The serial was initially broadcasted from 25th January 1987 to 31st July 1988 and had 78 episodes. The show is credited as the most-watched mythological serial in the world by the Limca book of records. Ramayana show narrates the story of Lord Ram, who was the eldest son of the King of Ayodhya, Dasaratha. Lakshmanan, Baratha, and Chatrughnan are Ram's three younger brothers. Ram should have been the next ruler of Ayodhya after King Dasaratha. But Kaikeyi, the mother of Barathan and Ram's stepmother, wanted her son Barathan as the king.

Kaikayi demanded Dasaratha to send Lord Ram into the jungle for the next 14 years and crown Barathan as the new king, as he had promised Kaikayi during their marriage to grant her two boons. Ram being the dutiful son, along with his wife Sita and brother Lakshmanan leaves the kingdom to fulfil the promise. Later, Sita is kidnapped by Ravana, the king of Sri Lanka. The rest of the tale describes how Ram, Lakshmanan, and Hanuman battle Ravana and win Sita's return. The story puts light into the life of a dutiful son, a powerful warrior, and a noble king.
