It Happened in Calcutta was created in the 1960s and 1970s Calcutta setting, where the love story of Ranobir and Kusum took place in the middle of an epidemic and a political war. Kusum enters her college with excitement, as she was the first female MBBS student. On the first day itself, she caught Ranobir with a teacher in a compromising position and immediately left the space. She tried to stay away from him after learning that he is a womanizer. Roped into a party, a day before the exams, Kusum feels disappointed when her exam results arrive. After knowing that it was Ranobir’s doing, she confronts him. The day takes an unexpected turn when Ranobir, Kusum, and Dr. Ratan have to perform surgery together.

Ranobir and Sujata share a love story that they decide to talk to their parents about. Despite her dislike of Ranobir, Kusum develops feelings for him. Ranobir breaks all ties with Sujata as he had feelings for Kusum too. Ranobir wants to take Kusum to the prom, and she waits for him to ask her, but he doesn’t. So Kusum goes to prom with Ratan, and Ranobir goes with Charulata, their mutual friend. Out of jealousy, Kusum confesses her feelings for Ranobir openly, and it works out well. Few days after they spent the prom night together, Kusum finds out that she’s pregnant. When she happily tells the news to Ranobir, he orders her to abort it. Ratan helps her through it, but Ranobir doesn’t show up during the surgery. After having an argument about it, Kusum and Ranobir go separate ways.

9 years later, Kusum is thriving in her life as an Army doctor and agrees to marry Ratan, when Ranobir re-enters her life. Kusum is appointed to work with Ranobir, an expert in cholera, to fight the disease together. Their history gets in the way of their work, yet they manage to fight it. Just when they thought they’d be getting together, the sociopolitical issue of the India-Pakistan war manages to split them again.
