National films award is a huge celebration in the country; it is a celebration of Cinema in India. To get a National award is one of the biggest achievements in a celebrity’s career. The 2nd national film award is also called State Awards for Films. Ministry of Information and Broadcasting presented the award ceremony to honour the best work of Indian Cinema in the year 1954. Dr Rajendra Prasad, the President of India, honored the winners of the prestigious national awards at Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi on 21st December 1955. As per the format of the ceremony, there was a division of feature and non- feature film.
Feature film category included India level and Regional level awards. The event had a new classification of awards as well. The Regional awards included a total of seven languages which were; Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Bengali, Telugu and, Tamil. The jury members belonged to the film sector of India which was set in Bombay, Madras and Calcutta. R.R. Devakar was the head of these three regional committees and, controlled the central committee. The chairperson of Bombay Jury was M.D Bhatt, for Calcutta committee it was, N.K Siddhanta and, for Madras jury it was T. M Narayanaswami Pillai.
The awards presented by the president of India were categorised on many bases. Non- features film got the awards in the name of Documentaries made in India. Regionals films won the awards by the president in the name of President’s Silver Medal for the best film along with the Certificate of Merit. There was a special set of awards which focused on children; this category had the awards in the name of Certificate of Merit and Prime Minister’s gold medal. All other categories got the awards in the name of President’s Gold Medal and Certificate of Merit.

The Marathi film Mahatama Phule which Prahalad Keshav Atre directed won the President’s Silver Medal for the Best Feature Film. The Tamil films included; Malaikkallan directed by Sriramulu Naidu which won the President’s Silver Medal for the Best Feature Film and Edhir Paradhatu which got the Certificate of Merit, C.H Narayana Moorthy directed this film. The non- feature film Spirit of the Loom which was an English film directed by V.R. Sarma won the President’s Silver Medal for the Best Documentary Film. Two other English films, under the same category, Darjeeling by K.L. Khandpur and Golden River by P.V Pathy won the Certificate of Merit by the president of India. The awards acclaimed the right persons in the various film industries in India.
