American Genius was a documentary series that was originally broadcasted in the United States on the National Geographic Channel. The series ran from June 1 to June 22 in 2015. The series consisted of 8 episodes that were independent of each other. The show was based on thinkers and pioneers that have shaped America’s history through their innovation and research. The people featured belonged to different areas of academia and expertise yet they had a great impact on lives of ordinary Americans.

Each episode featured a different story and focused on a different area of life – technology, business, science, etc. The episodes were dramatized versions of actual events with different actors. Apart from the dramatization, the episode had current experts and historians on the episode to talk about the people featured. They talked about the historical significance of the events, their impact and various circumstances surrounding their work. These allowed the viewers to understand how these people achieved their success and the impact they had on our lives.

The show featured the innovations as rivalries among two people or groups. The show tracked how the competition among them affected their work and progress in their field. It also shows the different ideas and ideals they had which led to conflicts and different approaches in their work. The first episode featured the rivalry of Steve Jobs Click to look into! >> Read More... and Bill Gates who were founders and pioneers in personal computing. The episode features the journey of how they wanted to shape personal computing – Jobs’ Macintosh against Gates’ Windows.

The second episode had the rivalry of Wright brothers and Curtiss in the aviation field. The episode showed their struggle to create the first man-made aircraft. The next two episodes featured the rivalry and developments in media and journalism – Farnsworth and Sarnoff in the television industry and the Hearst-Pulitzer rivalry in the print journalism. The fifth episode showed the story of space race – the race among the United States and the Soviet Union to conquer space. The rivalry lasted at least four decades during which the Soviet Union launched the first satellite while the United States first put a man on the moon. It was quite interesting to see the political differences pour over in the scientific and technological race for superiority.

The next episode travelled further back in history to show the innovation of gun warfare. Colt and Wesson were two competing gun manufacturers who produced guns which revolutionalized modern warfare. The penultimate episode focused on Heisenberg and Oppenheimer – two scientists on the opposite sides of the war and their chase of nuclear power. The episode told the story of different approaches by both men as to how to correctly use nuclear power. The finale featured perhaps the most popular scientific rivalry, that of Edinson and Tesla. Both of them were pioneers in the work of electricity and its propagation. Edinson suggested using the AC while Tesla wanted DC. Both of them locked horns, furious debates ensued, and in the end, Edinson won due to the ease of transmission in AC.
