Profullo is a serial that is a fictional adaptation of the novel 'Devi Choudhurani' by renowned novelist 'Bankimchandra Chattopadhyay.' Based on the life of Devi Choudhurani, this serial aired on the Ruposhi Bangla channel from 7th November 2011. The plot is set in late 19th century Bengal, a time when most women were usually suppressed by the patriarchal society in India. Women were mostly regarded as shy and reticent, and were expectes to follow a certain code of conduct in any respectable Bengali household. They were supposed to talk from behind a veil i.e., the 'purdah' when they were talking to any male strangers and follow various other such norms. Breaking the shackles of such  patriarchal and superstitious norms, a young woman named 'Prafullo' emerges as a leader of the people who fought against such oppressions with a bravery  unmatched by all others. In a time when child marriage was never considered illegal, Prafullo gets married but is shunned by her father-in-law because of a feud with her mother.
Prafullo's mother is devastated upon realizing her daughter's fate, however, a brave, young Prafullo sets out in the middle of the night to seek her in-law's house without knowing anything about it. She only remembered her father-in-law's name 'Haraballabh'. On her way, she was helped by benevolent people to reach her destination, but unfortunately, upon finding her in-law's she was rejected once more. Instead of accepting her in the household, her father-in-law asks her to steal for a living. Devastated, she leaves to go back and through a series of incidents and experiences meets the dacoit head, Bhavani Thakur. Seeing her bravado, Bhavani Thakur decides to adopt her and educate her with math, philosophy, science, literature, wrestling, and even swordsmanship. She becomes the queen of the dacoits after a certain period of time and gets renowned throughout Bengal for her intelligence, prowess, and benevolence. Â Just like Robinh Hood, she stole from the rich and distributed everything among the poor. She stands with the people and becomes a leader everyone fears and looks up to. People start to refer to her as Devi Choudhurani, the ultimate leader or the goddess among men.
It is during this time that the British label her as a threat to their rule over India and decide to arrest her for good. However, their plan using Haraballabh and his son against Devi Choudhurani fails miserably because of her intelligence along with the support of her guards and the dacoit queen wins with minimal bloodshed. In the end, all the people involved in the arrest attempt, i.e. British soldiers and Majors along with Haraballabh and his son were held as hostages. Fellow women of her gang decided to let Haraballabh and his son get away only if Braja (Haraballabh's son) decides to marry the queen. When agreed, they were released and Braja married Prafullo once again and hence, the Devi won the battle.
