Plot

Two drunkards live and fight for just one thing: alcohol. Nothing can stop them from availing this, not even the physicians at the de-addiction centers. However, the action of the drunkards leads to a tragedy. Will they wake up before it's too late?

Star Performances

Saravana Sakthi is the heart and soul of this film. He has hit it out of the park with an innovative script, as well as a solid performance as one of the lead actors.

Despite being over the top and loud in certain instances, the film never gets boring at any place. It is one of the few moments when the messaging is done right.

Analysis

A film that revolves around alcoholics and the struggle to stay away from liquor? The very idea involves excitement, as well as fear: fear of straying away from the main message. However, with ‘Glassmates’, that is thankfully not the case.

The narrative is designed like a slapstick comedy, which would remind some of the classic old comedies made by Priyadarshan. Some of the scenes are also loud, and in some instances, a bit absurd. However, such flaws are few and don’t ruin the ambiance of the overall experience.

However, thankfully the writers don’t let the absurdity get the better of the narrative. Saravana Sakthi and Angaiyarkannan Jeeva [also the main characters] have seen to it. Saravana Sakthi has handled multiple departments, from writing to direction, and even acting. However, to everyone’s surprise, he has excelled in most, if not all of them.

The best part about this film is its slick runtime, which doesn’t allow the narrative to meander in the wrong direction. On that note, full marks to the editing department of this film. While the cinematographer did not have much to do, he ensured that none of the visuals looked unpleasant. The message of the film, which revolves around the ill effects of addiction, is also apt, never going overboard in any instance. The actors also did an outstanding job. The drunkard duo aside, the supporting cast was also equally brilliant, be it Abi Nakshatra as the young student, or Brana Abdulsalam as the wife who has had enough of the nonsense.

What's There?

  • Slick editing by MS Selvam
  • A screenplay with a good message
  • Great direction by Saravana Sakthi and Angaiyarkannan Jeeva
  • Brilliant acting by Saravana Sakthi and Angaiyarkannan Jeeva
  • Strong support from the supporting cast

What's Not There?

  • Minor issues with the editing and pace
  • Certain over-the-top sequences

Verdict

‘Glassmates’ is a dramedy that could have chosen the wrong turn, given the treatment of the screenplay. However, the screenplay was a welcome surprise, imbibing a message for the right cause. The direction, as well as the acting, was top-notch. Watch it for sure if you haven’t yet.
