Aranam is a Tamil language horror/thriller written and directed by Piriyan(also the main lead in the film) and produced by Thamizh Thiraikkoodam. The music is composed by Saajan Madhav, the cinematography is done by Nithin K Raj and EJ Nousath and PK edited the film. The film stars Piriyan, Varsha Sarvanakumar, Laguparan, and Keerthana Kannadhasan.
Plot
In a village called Aranthangi, a zamindar lives with his prodigal son Mayavan and two adopted fraternity sons. Unexpectedly, Mayavan dies and, the zamindar registers the house to the two sons but the same night he also dies. Now the two sons are on a quest to find answers about the deaths.
Star Performance
Piriyan is doing the heavy lifting here from writing, directing to starring. He as an actor needs to improve in acting in the whole film he has this staple mass hero look that is about to hit the goons. Varsha is also restricted to just reactions and screaming. The rest of the actors are also passable in their performances.
Analysis
The film has the usual horror trope of a living spirit roaming in a big-ass house and the people there are frightened but are seeking for answers too. As the plot the two brothers are seeking for answers and in that a lot of chaos happens. The film from a horror perspective does not generate an oomph of fear. From the suspense pov it tries to build that well and has some interest in that department. The acting performances are passable; nobody is a standout in the film. There is an art to shooting horror scenes but this film lacks that. Even if you sit in an empty theater and watch this, you wouldn’t be scared. The movie from a thriller perspective is good but falls in the horror department. The climax would be debatable as there are several loopholes in the screenplay. Araman is a decent film from a thriller perspective but lacks horror.

Aranam works in the thriller aspect but lacks in the horror department. If you’re watching this film from a horror perspective, you would be disappointed.
