Plot
Srinivasa Iyer is a conservative teacher, who is not fond of his son’s job in the Gulf. However, after several requests from his wife, he reluctantly proceeds to meet his son abroad. Little do the Iyers know what is in store for them ahead.
Star Performances
One of the few good things about this film is the camerawork, supervised by Siddharth Ramsay and Vivek Menon. Viewers won’t feel bad about the film at least visually.
The other good thing is the work of the ensemble cast. From Shine Tom Chacko to Mukesh Madhavan, most of the cast have tried their best to make up for the lack of humor in an otherwise ‘satirical script’!
Analysis
Malayalam cinema is synonymous with humor and satire. Some of the best films from this region owe their origins to satire. As such, none were surprised when MA Nishad decided to address the cultural gap between the local Keralites, and their relatives enjoying their life in the Gulf region.
However, unlike other films, the urge to preach got the better of the filmmaker. Despite the slapstick humor, ‘Iyer in Arabia’ is hardly funny. It was like ‘The Great Indian Kitchen’ has a soul sister in the form of this film. The only difference is that the former tried to be engaging, this one doesn’t!
‘Based on real events,’ the film tries to hit multiple targets with one stone. However, it ends up missing most of them. The screenplay is anything but humorous, and the direction by MA Nishad is no better.
The screen time only makes matters worse, with the first half taking more time than required to build the narrative. At times, the audience is struggling to keep up with the narration.
However, the film is not completely a disaster. Visually, the film is likable, thanks to the combined efforts of Siddharth Ramsay and Vivek Menon.Â
Occasionally, there are moments to laugh about. This is solely due to the efforts of the ensemble cast, with Shine Tom Chacko, Mukesh Madhavan, etc. emerging as the standout performers. Mukesh does his best to make up for the lack of a sound screenplay with his comical act of a super-conservative father.Â

What's Not There?
Verdict
‘Iyer in Arabia’ is an attempt to satirically address the cultural gap between Kerala and the Malayali expats residing in the Gulf region. However, the result is slightly disappointing. However, if you want some mindless humor, you can go ahead and watch this! Â
